Dyson Centre for Engineering Design

Mechanical Computer Aided Design (CAD) Software

OpenSCAD

A free to download and use package, available for PC, Mac and Linux systems (in fact the source code is available, so if you have a C-compiler, you may be able to run it on other systems as well).

Note that this CAD package is driven by 'programming' commands with visualisation graphics, rather than the traditional full graphical user interface.

In the Dyson Centre?:This package is installed on all 16 Dyson Centre workstations.

Elsewhere in the Dept.?: We don't have access to any further seats of this, but as below, you can install on your own machine.

Can I install it on my own machine?: Available for free for PC, Mac and Linux systems (in fact the source code is available, so if you have a C-compiler, you may be able to run it on other systems as well).

Sources of help: Our own Rich () may be able to help you. Also we have a few resident experts such as Fergus ().

Creo / Pro-Engineer

As taught to all our undergraduate engineers from January/February onwards in their first year.

In the Dyson Centre?: This package is installed on all 16 Dyson Centre workstations.

Elsewhere in the Dept.?: Over 100 further seats of this are available in the available DPO (Design and Project Office).

Can I install it on my own machine?: It is possible for our undergraduates to download and install a student version of this software on your own PC (reference & link still required).

Sources of help: As all undergraduates learn how to use Creo in their first year, then any undergraduate and many members of staff can potentially help you with this package.

Solidworks

In the Dyson Centre?:This package is installed on all 16 Dyson Centre workstations.

Elsewhere in the Dept.?: We don't have access to any further seats of this.

Can I install it on my own machine?: We don't have access to any student licenses for installation on your own PC. We believe some student teams have their own student licences.

Sources of help: Our own Diana () may be able to help you, alternatively those on the CUER or CUSF team use this package and may also be able to help, however, there are no guarantees.

Given the above, you should perhaps exercise a degree of care before launching into starting a project with this package, noting the other alternatives on offer.
