Serious harm can be caused to operator, bystanders and machine by incorrect operation. All those using lathes must be trained/assessed to make sure they are taught or know how to correctly use the equipment.
We have a number of people who will be available performing the above training/assessing, they are:

If you are interested in being taught or assessed for manual lathe use in the Dyson Centre, please use the training diary link below at the end of this page.
(Expressions of interest in the computer controlled lathes will be dealt with on a bespoke basis)
When you email, please can you indicate (for each machine type you're expressing an interest in), in short summary (ie a sentence or three) your level of expertise, for example:
- I know nothing.
- (In this case, you might like to watch this 7 minute video of a simple turning exercise. Note, please never put your hands near the moving parts as occasionally happens in this video!)
- I've used a lathe that was set up for me at school/home to machine round bars, but in general there has always been a little background supervision.
- I suspect there is more I could learn about lathes, but I am completely self sufficient for all the tasks that I want to undertake, and would know to ask if I wanted to do anything 'new' to me (that said I wouldn't object to someone spending an hour showing me 'new' things).
- You may like to look at parts of the following videos:
- I know how to swap camlock chucks, am experienced with using three and four jaw chucks, faceplate machining and all aspects of setting up a lathe and can screwcut, use steadies, and mount a new chuck to a backplate for example.
...note: that is not insisting you learn all of the above before you can be signed off for using the lathes, though it is perhaps good for you to know what is possible on a lathe.
An indication when in general you might be free would also be useful (for
example, only afternoons, and Tuesday's and Thursday's are in general good).

In preparation for using the manual milling machines, you should:

Lathe and Milling Machine Inductions and Training Diary
Machine Tool Training
This training is designed to familiarise students with the Lathe and Mill and how to use the machines to achieve the desired results for your projects (academic or not). It is therefore important that when you book in for a session you complete all aspect of the booking form with as much clarity as possible, to enable the trainer (Kevin) to gauge what level you are at and progress your training rather than covering thing you may already know.
(FAQ - I've been using a lathe/mill for years, why do I need to go through the induction process? Your years of experience will still not tell you which cupboard we store the lathe/mill tools in and where we keep the keys for the cupboards, etc, etc...there will always be a bunch of things you need to be shown and will want to ask when you think it through!)
Training sessions can vary in length from 2 to 4 hours so please allow a morning OR an afternoon to ensure you are not interrupted.
Please make sure you have printed, read and signed the Risk Assessments BEFORE the session and fully understand the risks involved (to view these document please go to the Lathe or Mill page). Make sure that you arrive to the training session appropriately dressed (no open toes shoes, no jewellery and hair tied back).

1) Your name.
2) Your status (e.g. undergraduate) - if you are not an undergraduate, please contact the Dyson Centre Manager (Dr Rich Roebuck, RLR20) to discuss before signing up for training/induction.
3) Your contact email address.
4) Your mobile phone number.
5) On what days over the next fortnight and at what times of the day you will you be free, and we'll see what we can do.
6) Which machine (lathe or mill) you are making the booking for (normally one or the other, not both).
7) Your level or experience (see lathe or mill page) for suggestions as to how to detail this answer.
(8) Please make a note to remind yourself to bring the signed risk assessment with you!

This applied even if you have used lathes elsewhere - we need to be suitably convinced of your abilities, for everyone's sake.

- Allowed to use the lathes without supervision during normal working hours.
