Undergraduates are introduced to the lathe and mill in their first year module Machine Tools Lab.

Any member of the Engineering Department, including undergraduates, PhDs and Professors, can request further 1-1 training with a technician for any reason, it can be to make parts for a society project or just for personal interest.

For a One-Off Project

You don't need to get the full lathe or mill training just to do a one-off project. A technician can help guide you through each step of the process with one-to-one supervision.

Bespoke Lathe and Mill Training

If you want to get a good grounding in machine use, for personal interest, or to manufacture items for a society, we offer a bespoke one-to-one course on the lathe and/or the mill. The training for each machine can be done in several sessions over the course of several days. The process is

  1. Choose which machine you want to train on
  2. Read the risk assessment for that machine and agree to it
    1. Open the Engineering Department Risk Assessment App (click here)
    2. Search for RA ID 3507 for the Lathe risk assessment or click here to download the Mill risk assessment
    3. Read and agree to it  
  3. Email dyson-helpdesk@eng.cam.ac.uk and let us know
    1. Which machine you want to train on
    2. When you are available to train. Outside of term is preferred
    3. A total of 10 hours training will need to be booked on a single machine within a 2 week period
    4. After completing the 10 hours training, you will need to demonstrate your skills in a 1 hour project. The ability to work without direct supervision after this is not guaranteed.
  4. Download the Lathe Training Document or the Mill Training Document (not currently available) and bring it to your session. This will allow you to keep track of what you've learnt.

Availability

The machine tool area is used 3 times a week during term time for the Machine Tools Lab module. So availability for other projects will depend on the timetable. 

Shortly before or after term time is a great time to get some machining done.
