Lathe and Mill

Students are introduced to the lathe and mill in their first year lab course Machine Tools Lab. Undergraduates can request further 1-1 training with a technician for any reason, it can be to make parts for a society project or just for personal interest.

For a One-Off Project

You don't need to get the full lathe or mill training just to do a one-off project. A technician can help guide you through each step of the process with one-to-one supervision.

Full Training

If you want to get a good grounding in machine use, for personal interest, or to manufacture items for a society, we offer a short one-to-one course on both the lathe and the mill. The training for each machine will be done in 3x 2 hour sessions where you'll learn setup, a range of operations and get a chance to demonstrate your skills in a project.

Availability

The machine tool area is used 3 times a week during term time for courses. So its availability for other projects will depend on the timetable. 

Shortly before or after term time is a great time to get some machining done.
